Ingredients
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup water
- 0.75 oz fresh mint (+ more, optional for garnish)
- 2 oz bourbon
Steps
- Prepare mint syrup. Combine sugar and water in small saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, stir in mint, and let stand to cool. Strain mint syrup, discarding solids. Transfer to airtight container and chill overnight.
- Fill a julep cup with crushed ice; add bourbon and 1 tablespoon mint syrup. Stir rapidly to frost outside of cup.
- Garnish with mint, if desired.

Make it a ginger mint julep.
Steep fresh ginger in simple syrup before adding mint.
Make it a whiskey smash.
Muddle lemon wedges, mint, and simple syrup in cocktail shaker. Add ice and bourbon. Shake well; strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass and garnish with mint.
