Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup whole buttermilk
- ½ cup shortening
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup bourbon (optional)
Steps
- Combine all ingredients (except vanilla and bourbon) in 4-quart stockpot until blended; bring to a boil on medium. Place sensor of candy thermometer in liquid and clip to side of pot. Cook 20–25 minutes (do not stir) until thermometer reads 240°F (for soft-ball stage) and mixture is deep amber in color.
- Remove pot from heat and transfer frosting to heatproof medium bowl. Add vanilla and bourbon, if using, then beat with electric mixer on MEDIUM 6–8 minutes until mixture thickens and lightens in color. Ice cake(s) while frosting is still warm.
