Ingredients

  • 1 Orangedew melon (about 2 lb)
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom (or cinnamon)

Steps

    1. Peel melon and cut into 1-inch cubes (about 5 cups). Place in single layer on baking sheet. Freeze 30 minutes or until firm and icy.
    2. Place water and sugar in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook 2–3 minutes, stirring continuously, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, then stir in lime juice and cardamom; let stand until cool.
    3. Place melon and water mixture in blender. Blend until smooth. Divide among tall serving glasses.
    NOTE: For an adult beverage, add 1 oz dark rum to each glass.

Other Preparation Methods
    • Pickle: Peel melon and cut into 1-inch cubes (3 cups); place in large bowl. Bring to a boil in medium saucepan: 1 cup each water and apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, 2 teaspoons kosher salt, and ½ cup sugar. Pour mixture over melon; cover and chill 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
    • Salad: Peel melon and cut into 1-inch long, thin strips (3 cups). Place in bowl with 3 tablespoons sweet chili sauce, 2 tablespoons lime juice, and ¼ cup each chopped cilantro and chopped peanuts; toss to coat.
