Ingredients
For mint syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves
For drink
- ⅓ cup mint syrup
- 2 cups ruby red (or pink) grapefruit juice
- ¾ cup whiskey
- 4 dashes bitters
- 1 cup chilled sparkling wine
- 4 grapefruit segments (optional for garnish)
Steps
- Make mint syrup. Combine water and sugar in small saucepan on medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour warm syrup over mint leaves in small bowl. Let steep 30 minutes or until cool; strain, discarding mint leaves. Cover syrup and chill at least 2 hours (or up to 2 weeks).
- Make drink. Place mint syrup, grapefruit juice, whiskey, and bitters in ice-filled cocktail shaker.
- Shake well and strain into ice-filled highball glasses; top with sparkling wine.
- Garnish with grapefruit segments, if desired.
Other Preparation Methods
Not a fan of whiskey?
Substitute vodka for the whiskey and basil for the mint.
