Minted Whiskey-Grapefruit Smash

Ingredients

For mint syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves
For drink
  • ⅓ cup mint syrup
  • 2 cups ruby red (or pink) grapefruit juice
  • ¾ cup whiskey
  • 4 dashes bitters
  • 1 cup chilled sparkling wine
  • 4 grapefruit segments (optional for garnish)

Steps

    1. Make mint syrup. Combine water and sugar in small saucepan on medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour warm syrup over mint leaves in small bowl. Let steep 30 minutes or until cool; strain, discarding mint leaves. Cover syrup and chill at least 2 hours (or up to 2 weeks).
    2. Make drink. Place mint syrup, grapefruit juice, whiskey, and bitters in ice-filled cocktail shaker.
    3. Shake well and strain into ice-filled highball glasses; top with sparkling wine.
    4. Garnish with grapefruit segments, if desired.
