Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup fine cornmeal
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
Steps
- Combine in large bowl: flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Stir in milk until shaggy dough forms, then knead until dough comes together. Cover with damp towel and let stand 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, place oil in large saucepan and heat to 350°F. Divide dough into 12 equal balls, then roll each ball into 4-inch-long log.
- Fry dough logs, in batches, 3–5 minutes until outsides are golden and centers are set. Remove from oil with slotted spoon; repeat with remaining dough. Let stand to cool 5 minutes before serving.
Do not eat raw dough/batter.
