Griddled Monte Cristo Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • ½ Bakery challah loaf, cut into ½-inch-thick slices
  • 8 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam (+ more for serving)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices roast turkey
  • 8 slices Tavern ham
  • 3 large eggs, beaten (or ¾ cup egg substitute)
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps

    1. Place bread on flat work surface; spread 1 tablespoon jam on each slice of bread. Top 4 slices with even amounts cheese, turkey, and ham; place remaining bread slices jam-side down on top.
    2. Combine eggs and milk and whisk thoroughly. Soak sandwiches in egg mixture (about 2 minutes per side), turning to coat.
    3. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in large, nonstick sauté pan on medium. Add sandwiches; cook 4–5 minutes on each side, or until browned and centers are hot. Cut in half and serve with additional jam, if desired.
Other Preparation Methods
    • Bread Pudding: Whisk together 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk, 4 large eggs, and 2 cups chocolate morsels, and toss with cubed challah bread. Bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes or until golden and center is set.
    • Bread Crumbs: Pulse toasted challah bread into fine crumbs in food processor and use in your favorite recipe.
