Ingredients
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 3 star anise
- 2 ½ cups water, divided
- ½ cup corn flour
- 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Steps
- Combine in large saucepan: sugar, cinnamon, salt, star anise, and 2 cups water; bring to a boil on high. Place remaining ½ cup water in medium bowl; add corn flour and whisk to form smooth paste.
- Add corn flour paste slowly to boiling sugar mixture, whisking continuously until smooth; cook and whisk 4–6 minutes until hot and slightly thickened.
- Remove star anise; stir in milk and vanilla. Serve warm or chilled.
