Ingredients

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 star anise
  • 2 ½ cups water, divided
  • ½ cup corn flour
  • 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps

    1. Combine in large saucepan: sugar, cinnamon, salt, star anise, and 2 cups water; bring to a boil on high. Place remaining ½ cup water in medium bowl; add corn flour and whisk to form smooth paste.
    2. Add corn flour paste slowly to boiling sugar mixture, whisking continuously until smooth; cook and whisk 4–6 minutes until hot and slightly thickened.
    3. Remove star anise; stir in milk and vanilla. Serve warm or chilled.
