Ingredients
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter
- 3 oz Deli imported cheddar cheese
- 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour (+ additional for dusting)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 3–4 tablespoons ice water
- Plastic wrap
- Nonstick aluminum foil
- 4 medium, sweet apples
- Caramel sauce (optional for serving)
- Vanilla ice cream (optional for serving)
Steps
- Cube butter; shred cheese. Place flour, sugar, and salt in bowl of food processor; pulse 3–4 times until combined. Add butter and cheese; pulse 5–6 times until crumbly.
- Drizzle in ice water, pulsing until dough begins to form a ball and pull away from sides (may not need all water). Form dough into disc; wrap in plastic wrap and chill 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 9-inch square baking dish with foil. Core and peel apples. Dust work surface lightly with flour; roll out dough to ¼-inch-thick rectangle. Cut dough into quarters, then wrap each apple in dough.
- Arrange apples in baking dish; cut small hole in top of dough on each to vent. Bake 45–50 minutes until apples are tender and crust is golden. Serve with caramel sauce and ice cream, if using.
Other Preparation Methods
- Dip: Place in slow cooker: ¼ cup diced onions, 16 oz cream cheese, 2 cups shredded Deli imported cheddar cheese, 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese, 8 oz diced ham, 3 tablespoons whole grain mustard, and ½ cup water; cover and cook on HIGH 50–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cheeses are melted and mixture is smooth. Serve with crackers.
- Slaw: Combine 16 oz shredded coleslaw mix; 1 cup shredded Deli imported cheddar cheese; and ½ cup each julienne-cut, sun-dried tomatoes; sliced green onions; crumbled blue cheese; cooked bacon pieces; and blue cheese salad dressing.
