We’re committed to helping you prepare for the possibility of severe weather events, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires, and winter storms. Here’s what you’ll want to have on hand, as well as helpful tips and links.

Build your kit.

Roadways and utilities may be affected even after severe weather has passed, so you'll need enough supplies and nonperishable foods to last for an extended period of time. Be sure to shop for any items you need in advance (refer to the checklists below). This is also a good time to check prescriptions and have them refilled.

When a weather event is over.

You’ll need to know some basics of food and water safety, such as how to disinfect your water and when unrefrigerated food should be disposed of. Remain indoors until you're given official notice that it's okay to go outside. When you do, stay away from any downed power lines, as well as trees and other objects that have come in contact with them. If you plan to use a gas- or diesel-powered generator, do so safely: Be sure keep the generator at least 20 feet away from your home. Do not use generators indoors, even if doors and windows are open.
