A+ lunch box tips.
School days can be busy, especially morning lunch box prep. Yet it’s important to take the time to ensure your child’s lunch is safe and free from harmful bacteria.
Here are some simple food safety tips to include in your routine:
- Before you begin, wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.
- Rinse any fresh fruits or vegetables you plan to include. Dry them with a paper towel.
- If your child’s lunch includes perishable items, keep them chilled at 40°F or below. Use an insulated lunch bag and two cold sources. Frozen gel packs can keep foods cold until lunchtime, but they are not recommended for longer time periods.
- Encourage your child to throw out any packaging and leftover perishable foods when lunch is over.
- A refrigerator is the optimal place to store lunch boxes. If your school does not have this option, remind your child to keep their lunch in a cool place, out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources.
- If your child has a food allergy, be sure to discuss it with their school’s administration.
