Musicians Rocking Their Own Wineries

two men wine tasting

Music and wine have a great deal in common—both require a balance of creativity and technical prowess; both art forms result from passion and dedication; both strive to please their connoisseurs. It’s no surprise, then, that a number of musicians, including Zac Brown and Dave Matthews, are flexing more than their musical muscles with wine brands that bear their artistic signatures.

Z. Alexander Brown

Winery: Z. Alexander Brown
Like his band’s music, Zac Brown’s wine project is dedicated to finding inspiration in the world and connecting people to the bounty of the land. Led by winemaker John Killebrew, Z. Alexander Brown wines are created to be big, bold, “uncaged” wines with finesse and character.

Play: Zac Brown Band, “Homegrown”
Sip: Z. Alexander Brown Uncaged, Proprietary Red Blend—North Coast

Soulful, hearty, and richly flavored; pairs well with barbecue fare and a wraparound porch.

The Dreaming Tree

Winery: The Dreaming Tree
Vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews and winemaker Sean McKenzie have both spent their lifetimes perfecting their crafts. The two joined forces to create The Dreaming Tree wines. Their California wine lineup, which includes sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and a red blend, are created with the goal of making quality wines accessible to everyone. Along the way, they say, the two “found inspiration in the down-to-earth characters and unforgettable flavors that give the [California] region its rare kind of charm.”

Play: Dave Matthews Band, “Crash Into Me”
Sip: The Dreaming Tree, Pinot Noir, California

Complex, soft, and sensuous, with balanced tones and silky structure.

Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co.

Winery: Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co.
Train fans will recognize the melodic refrain on the labels of Jimmy Stafford’s wine labels. The band’s lead guitarist not only named his wines after the song, but each wine is named for, and inspired by, a different tune in their lineup—Drops of Jupiter Red Blend, Calling All Angels Chardonnay, Soul Sister Pinot Noir, and more. “As a band, we have always connected with our friends and fans through wine and music,” Stafford says. “Launching Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. is an exciting next step in expressing our passions and connecting with people.”

Play: Train, “Bulletproof Picasso”
Sip: Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. Bulletproof Picasso Sauvignon Blanc

Lively, yet calming, with crisp energy; pair with a light salad or a picnic blanket and a good book.
