Witches' Brooms

witch party favor bags

Trying for a “Best Host” award? It’s in the bag.

The food and decorations are perfect, the kids came in adorable costumes, and everywhere you look, people are having fun. No one will soon forget this party, especially if they leave with one of these Witches’ Brooms—a fitting end to a fabulous bash.

  • Craft twigs, cut to length (about 12 to 15 inches each)
  • Craft paint or spray paint (optional)
  • Painter’s tape (optional)
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Brown paper craft or lunch bags (Note: Each “broom” requires two paper bags.)
  • Candy
  • Yarn, ribbon, or string

  1. If desired, paint the craft twigs a solid color with craft paint or spray paint, and allow to dry per manufacturer instructions. To create a spiral pattern, wrap twigs with painter’s tape and paint exposed portions with an alternate color of craft paint or spray paint. Allow to dry.
  2. Place a paper bag on the table and pull on the bottom seam of the bag to expose the base. Using the pencil and ruler, measure half-inch increments across the bag. Use these measurements as a guide to draw parallel lines from the top of the bag to the base, stopping at the bottom seam and leaving the base intact. Cut straight down the lines using the scissors. (Note: This will create a long “fringe” look on each side of the bag with the rectangle-shaped base still intact.)
  3. Place a second paper bag on the table. Using the pencil and ruler, measure half-inch increments across the bag. Use these measurements as a guide to draw parallel lines from the top of the bag to about one-third of the way down (Note: On the lunch bags we used, one-third of the way down from the top was about 6 inches in length.) This is the bag that will hold the goodies.

  1. Unfold one “fringe” bag, so that the fringe sticks out in four different directions. Place the goodie bag on top of the rectangle base of the fringe bag. Fill the goodie bag with candy.
  2. Place a painted craft stick inside the goodie bag, exposing about two-thirds of the stick to form the broom handle. Lift the fringe up and gather it around the goodie bag. Tie a length of yarn or ribbon around the bags (close to one-third of the way down from the top of the goodie bag) to secure the broomstick inside, and finish with a knot or a bow.
