Sun Protection
Have summer fun without avoiding the sun
Summer is the season when many families enjoy being outdoors; having picnics, swimming, and more. But, the best thing you can do with your family this summer is help them protect their skin from the sun. More than one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Many of them could have been prevented by blocking harmful UVA and UVB sun rays. Yet, according to the National Cancer Institute, only 58 percent of people say they protect themselves against the sun. While the best protection is wearing clothing and accessories such as a hat, the next best thing is sunscreen. Here's a refresher course in sunscreen smarts.- Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect your skin, and reapply often if you plan to spend an extended amount of time in the sun.
- When you shop for sunscreen, pick one that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
- Finally, apply it correctly by following the label directions so it can do its job.
For effective protection from the sun's harmful rays, try Aveeno Active Naturals Sunblock Lotion, SPF 30. You can find it at your neighborhood Publix. Sources: www.nih.gov, www.cancer.gov
