Diabetes and Carbohydrates
Defy diabetes with good carbohydrates November is American Diabetes Month and Publix wants to support you in managing or preventing the disease.
Whether you’re diabetic or not, eating the right amount of good carbohydrates is an important factor in staying healthy. People who have diabetes need to monitor their carbohydrate intake in order to control their blood glucose levels, while also getting the amount needed for energy and nutrients.
Carbohydrates are found naturally in fruits, grains, starchy vegetables, beans and legumes, dairy products, and sweets and desserts. You should balance the amount of carbohydrates you eat with your physical activity and medications. And remember, all carbohydrates are not the same. Healthful carbohydrates found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. Refined grains, sweets and desserts contain a lot of carbohydrates but very little nutrients.
Portion control is key — too many carbohydrates from any source can make blood glucose levels go higher than normal. Most women trying to manage blood glucose levels need about 45-60 grams of carbohydrate at each of three meals, and 15 grams carbohydrate for snacks. Most men trying to manage blood glucose levels need about 60-75 grams of carbohydrate at each of three meals, and 15-30 grams carbohydrate for snacks.
The amount you need depends on your age, weight, activity and any medications you may take. Consult with a dietician to discuss how much carbohydrate is right for you.
