An estimated 80 percent of American adults take nutritional supplements, primarily vitamins and
minerals. Why? Taking a daily multivitamin is inexpensive health insurance. Even if we strive to eat
well, we may have gaps in certain nutrients, and anyone who eats the typical American diet is wise to
compensate for nutritional inadequacies. A daily multi supports normal biological functions and helps
prevent a host of diseases.
When you're shopping for supplements, read labels carefully. Amounts of nutrients are listed in grams
(g), milligrams (mg), micrograms (mcg), or International Units (IU), and the percentage of daily value
(% DV) is also given.
