Juan Uribe Jr. is the vineyard manager for the Columbia Crest Estate Vineyard located in Paterson, WA. Columbia Crest is the leading producer of premium wine in Washington State. Juan is responsible for managing the vineyard operations at the winery’s estate vineyard, which consists of approximately 2,500 acres. Some of Columbia Crest’s most celebrated wines, such as Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the H3 wines, and the Reserve Chardonnay are crafted from fruit grown in the Estate vineyard.
Juan started his career at Columbia Crest in 1984 as a laborer, just two years after the winery’s first harvest. “A relative got me interested in the field and I just took it from there,” says Juan. “Over the years I continued to explore all areas of the labor and agricultural side of the wine industry.”
Juan is experienced in all facets of vineyard operations; he soon went from laborer to irrigation foreman to irrigation supervisor. He continued to excel in the vineyard operations. Over the years he held various positions of increasing responsibility and in 2008 Juan was promoted to the Columbia Crest Estate vineyard manager.
“I have been in this industry for more than 25 years, and one of the things that keep me coming back is the ongoing learning process,” says Juan. “I have the privilege to work with many experts in the field, and I enjoy listening to their ideas on how to improve the vineyards, as well share what I have learned over the years.”
Juan is an active member of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers, and has also taken courses in at UC Davis in California and Washington State University.
When Juan is not in the vineyard, he enjoys camping and traveling with family and playing Texas Hold ‘em.
