Autumn’s Fruity Appeal: Pears, Apples, and Wine

Pear and Kale salad

As summer fades and autumn stretches ahead, familiar favorites delight all the senses: the sight of kids heading back to school, the feel of cooler breezes, the sounds of weekend football games, and, of course, the taste and smell of fall foods like apples and pears.

While there are few people who can resist a warm slice of apple pie or a bowl of pear cobbler, these iconic fall fruits have range well beyond the pie plate. These six recipes offer fresh new ways to cook with apples and pears, taking them from appetizers and brunch to dinner and, yes, dessert too. Bonus: Wine pairing recommendations for each make sure every aspect of the meal is, well, pear-fect.

Fall Fruit-Focused Wines and Recipes

Brunch or dessert

Whether for a festive brunch or a nostalgic dessert, Gingerbread Waffles with Sautéed Pears offer up warm bites of sugar and spice. Serve with a versatile rosé.

Salad

Topped with tender slices of roasted sweet potato and savory Parmesan shavings, a crunchy Pear and Kale Salad becomes a main-dish meal. Pair with a full-bodied chardonnay.

Dinner

One-dish dinners don't have to be one-note. With its creamy, comforting sauce spiked with cinnamon and cayenne, this Chicken, Pear, and Spinach Skillet Dinner has layers of flavor. Balance it with a crisp pinot grigio.

Take the traditional pairing of pork chops and applesauce in a new direction with a bacon and sage infusion. Pinot noir picks up the sweet smokiness in Apple Sage Pork with Parsley Red Potatoes.

Dessert

Single-serving Apple Tartlets let everyone get their own little piece of the pie. Their classic autumn taste is enhanced by an equally classic dessert wine: fizzy, fragrant moscato.

Decadent Caramel Apple Pie deserves a wine pairing as rich and scrumptious as each forkful. Sip a glass of ruby or tawny port to complement the buttery pie.
