Distribution Opportunities

Keeping the shelves stocked.

Fulfilling the orders of more than 920 stores is a daunting task. That challenge is met every day by over 6,300 associates in various departments of the Publix business unit we call Distribution.

Distribution has approximately 8 million square feet of warehouse space used to receive, store, and ship more than 658 million cases of over 31,000 items each year. Our fleet of 500 tractors and 2,000 trailers traveled more than 58.8 million miles in 2007  (that's 6.4 times around the Earth per day!) to make more than 1.1 million deliveries to stores in over 325 cities. To keep this fleet up and running, our Garage associates change more than 17,000 tires and 114,000 quarts of oil per year.

This massive effort is coordinated from our eight Distribution centers, located in:

• Lakeland, FL
• Miami, FL
• Jacksonville, FL
• Sarasota, FL
• Boynton Beach, FL
• Deerfield Beach, FL
• Lawrenceville, GA, and
• Orlando, FL.

Our Accomplishments

Our Distribution Centers include the following warehouses and damage return center.

• Seven high velocity warehouses, which shipped 225 million cases of products to our stores in 2007. These warehouses are located in Boynton Beach, Jacksonville, Orlando, Lakeland, Miami, Sarasota, and Lawrenceville, GA.
• One super velocity warehouse, which shipped 3 million cases of products to our stores in 2007. This warehouse is located in Austell, GA.
• One chart warehouse, which shipped 13 million cases of products to our stores in 2007.  This warehouse is located in Davenport, FL.
• One pharmacy warehouse, which shipped 5.4 million cases of products to our stores in 2007.  This warehouse is located in Orlando, FL. 
• Two low velocity warehouses, located in Lakeland and Lawrenceville, GA, which shipped 112 million cases in 2007.
• Four dairy/boxed meat warehouses, located in Lawrenceville, GA, Deerfield Beach, Jacksonville, and Lakeland, which shipped 115 million cases to our stores in 2007.
• Four produce warehouses, located in Lawrenceville, GA, Deerfield Beach, Jacksonville, and Lakeland, which shipped 113 million cases to our stores in 2007. 
• Five frozen food warehouses, located in Lawrenceville, GA, Deerfield Beach, Jacksonville, and Lakeland, which shipped 71 million cases to our stores in 2007. 
• Our damage return center in Lakeland, which receives damaged goods from our stores and sells them to salvage companies or donates them to food banks.

Our Positions

Publix has a strong tradition of promoting from within, so individuals wanting to join the Distribution team usually must start in entry-level positions, which include the following.

After 90 days of continuous employment, an associate may move into another position in his/her originating facility by signing the job-posting list. These are some of the positions beyond the entry level.

An associate also may apply for openings throughout the company at any time after they are hired.

There are always Selector openings in Distribution and we also have ongoing needs for Maintenance Mechanics.
