Q: How do I know what management openings there are at a specific store?
A: We do not advertise specific openings because most of them are filled through promotion from within. We do, however, accept résumés from management candidates since we occasionally hire from outside the company, particularly for our Bakeries. We ONLY consider candidates who have worked in a food retail setting (preferably a supermarket) and who have management experience. If you meet BOTH criteria, please contact a Retail Staffing Specialist in the area where you want to work. If you do not have the required experience, we would welcome your interest in a non-management position (see below). For more information on our management career path, see Store Management.

Q: If I accept an hourly position, how long will it take for me to become a manager?
A: Publix has always believed in rewarding hard work and dedication.  Publix also has a long standing tradition of promoting their most qualified associates.  This being said, if an associate demonstrates exemplary skill and performance they can reach Assistant Department Manager after six months of employment.  Department Management can be reached after one year of employment.  It is important to note that all eligible candidates are considered equally so it may take longer in areas with a higher concentration of qualified and interested associates.

Q: How old do you have to be to work at a Publix store?
A: Federal and state laws regulate the employment of minors. These laws specifically regulate the hours that individuals under the age of 18 may work, the occupations in which they may be employed, and the hazardous equipment and/or materials from which they are restricted. Publix only accepts applications from job seekers who are at least 14 years old.  However, not all of our stores hire minors due to the positions and shifts available at each location.

Q: What positions can a minor apply for?
A: If you are 14 or 15, you could be considered for Front Service Clerk (Bagger), Cashier or Floral Clerk. If you are 16 or 17, you could be considered for those positions, as well as for eight others: Bakery Clerk, Demonstrator, Dairy Clerk, Frozen Food Clerk, Housewares Clerk, Grocery Clerk, Produce Clerk or Health & Beauty Care Clerk. See our Job Description Chart for more details.

Q: If I'm 14 or 15, what hours can I work?
A:   At 14 or 15, Publix policy - which is stricter than federal and state laws - allows you to work the following hours:

  • During a week in which there is at least one school day, 13 hours per week, but no more than 2.5 hours a day Sunday through Friday and no more than 7 hours on Saturday. Work hours must not begin before 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Work hours must not extend beyond 6:30 p.m. on any day.
  • During a non-school week, 35 hours per week, but no more than 7 hours in one day. Work hours must not begin before 7:30 a.m. and rarely extend beyond 6:30 p.m. on any day.

Q: If I'm 16 or 17, what hours can I work?
A:   At 16 or 17, federal and state labor laws and Publix policy allow you to work the following hours:

  • During a week in which there is at least one school day, 28 hours per week, but no more than 7 hours a day Sunday through Thursday and no more than 10 hours a day on Friday or Saturday. On weekdays, work hours must not begin before 1 p.m. or prior to the end of the school day, whichever time is later. On weekends, work hours must not begin before 7 a.m. Work hours must not extend beyond 10:30 p.m. on any night.
  • During a non-school week, 35 hours per week with no other restrictions.

Q: What is a typical schedule for everyone else?
A: Shift times vary considerably depending on where you work in the store, what your job is, and whether you work part-time or full-time, but most everyone works on weekends because that is our busiest time.

Q: How do I know what openings there are at a specific store?
A:   Stores do not post a list of their needs because they change so rapidly. You may inquire about specific openings by going to Customer Service at the front of the store and asking to speak with a manager. If you do this, tell the manager why you are interested in working at Publix and whether you have already submitted an application or plan to do so before leaving the store. Don't be discouraged if you don't have time to speak with a manager. Just make sure you choose the positions that interest you when you apply at the Job Application Center.

Q: How do I apply?
A: Go to the store where you want to work and look for the Job Application Center.  Most applicants complete the application process in about 45 minutes. The first part of the application process, which takes about 20 minutes, asks for contact, education and work experience information. The second part is a short test that takes about 25 minutes. You can take the test at a later time if you wish, but the test must be completed within 7 days of submitting your application.  Once you’ve taken the test, you cannot retake it for 6 months, so give it your best shot!

Q: Is there someone who can help me if I have trouble completing an application?
A: You can go to Customer Service at the front of the store and ask for assistance.

Q: Should I apply at every Publix store where I would be willing to work?
A: No, that’s not necessary.  When you apply at a Job Application Center, you’re applying to work at Publix, not just at that specific location.  Our neighboring stores might review your application and call you if they are interested in interviewing you.

Q: When I tried to apply at the Job Application Center in my store, I had problems and could not finish. Is the information I entered now on file?
A: No. Your information is not saved in our system until you press the Submit My Application Now button on the last screen of the application process. If you had difficulty with the equipment or application system, please ask for assistance from Customer Service at the front of your store.

Q: If I see a new Publix being built, where do I go to apply to work there?
A: Our normal practice for hiring associates at a new location is to accept applications at several nearby Publix stores about 3 to 4 weeks before the new store opens. Signs are displayed at the new store and the neighboring stores with instructions on how and where to apply. If there are no Publix stores near the one being built, a sign at the new store will provide instructions on how to apply. Occasionally, we may also hold job fairs; check the sign on the store for details.  Sometimes, the job fairs are announced in the classified section of the local newspaper.

Q: If I am interested in a position in one of your stores, where do I send my résumé?
A: We do not process résumés for non-management store positions. All applications for our stores must be completed in person at the Job Application Center in the store of your choice.

Q: Will I be called after submitting an application?
A: Only applicants who are chosen for interviews are called. Store Managers wish they could call every applicant and thank him or her for considering Publix during a job search. However, the number of applications we receive makes that impossible.  If you are called, please ask which Publix store is conducting the interview since all Publix stores can see your application.

Q: How long is my application active?
A: For 30 days. If you don't hear anything within the first month after you apply, we encourage you to return to the store to update your application, which will make it active for another 30 days.  This process will only take a few minutes.

Q: Can I update my application at any time?
A: Yes. You don't need to wait 30 days to do so, and the process is easy.  Your application is updated simply by re-entering your name and Social Security number exactly as you entered it originally.  It is important that you use the provided username/password pamphlet in order to make the update process quick and easy.  The single sheet, tear-off pamphlet can be found in one of the side pockets at the Job Application Center.
