Keeping the shelves stocked

Fulfilling the orders of all Publix stores is a daunting task. That challenge is met every day by more than 5,900 associates in various departments of the Publix business unit we call Distribution.

Distribution has approximately 8 million square feet of warehouse space used to receive, store, and ship more than 732 million cases of over 39,000 items each year. Our fleet of 525 tractors and nearly 2,500 trailers traveled more than 64.6 million miles in 2011 (that's 7.1 times around the Earth per day!) to make more than 1.2 million deliveries to stores in over 368 cities. To keep this fleet up and running, our Garage associates change more than 14,104 tires and 98,755 quarts of oil per year. Distribution also oversees Publix's associate cafeterias, which last year alone served more than 2 million meals.

Warehouse: A place to receive, store and ship

The majority of jobs which make up Publix Distribution are related to tasks performed in the warehouses. The kinds of duties these positions cover includes everything from shipping and receiving, loading the trucks, maintaining a clean warehouse, and keeping product stocked, counted and in order.

Maintenance: Keeping the trucks and machinery working properly and efficiently

Tractor-trailers, lift trucks, automated storage and retrieval racks and refrigerated units, are just a few examples of the kinds of machinery and motors which need ongoing preventive maintenance and occasional repair. Publix's mechanics specialize in various kinds of maintenance to keep Distribution operations running smoothly.

Why I Love Publix

I feel very lucky to be a Publix associate. I started at the Boynton Distribution Center in November 1989. I remember working with the associates in the office who already had ten years of service and thought there was no way I was ever going to be employed in one job for that long. Of course, that was almost 23 years ago.

In 1995, I transferred to the Orlando Distribution Center which brought new opportunities for me because we had just opened a new High Velocity and Boxed Meat/Dairy department. Since I had spent most of my career with Publix as an Inventory Control Coordinator, being able to experience the different warehouses and learn new departments and processes only strengthened my skill set.

Even more great news came in 2005 when Publix decided to add the pharmaceutical distribution warehouse to better service our stores. It was opened at the Orlando Distribution Center allowing me more opportunity to learn and grow.

In 2011, I decided to apply with the state to become a Certified Designated Representative. I passed the test and was accepted by the state, which was a very meaningful personal accomplishment. This also led me to my most recent career move as the Compliance & Regulatory Manager for the Orlando Pharmacy Distribution Center. Mr. George once said "Publix is like a smorgasbord, with opportunity spread out for you. Prepare yourself; the opportunities are up for grabs." This has been so true in my career and is why I love working at Publix.
