Finance is composed of four major departments: Accounting, Tax & Treasury, Payroll, and Business Analysis & Reporting.

Accounting: Making Sure Publix Gets Its Due

Publix couldn't deliver premier customer service in our stores without support from the Accounting department. How do these number crunchers play such a vital role? They ensure accurate and prompt payment to Publix's suppliers. Without that diligence, our store shelves wouldn't be continually stocked with the items our customers need and want.

In 2009, three groups in Accounting—Expense Payables, Merchandise Payables, and DSD Payables —processed a combined $19.9 billion worth of invoices.

Other groups in Accounting include:

Accounts Receivable, which is responsible for collecting all money owed to Publix for items such as:

redeemed coupons
corporate gift card sales
returned checks
third party insurance
supplier rebates, and
store charge accounts.

During the holiday season, the elves in Accounting (otherwise known as our Gift Card Teams) work long hours to process all of the gift cards customers purchase as gifts.

EFT Accounting and Store Bank Auditing ensure that Publix receives prompt and accurate credit for all electronic sales via debit and credit cards, sales by cash and check, and ATM transactions generated at our stores.

Retail Accounting processes all data (expenses, income and sales) for each store and produces a profit and loss statement weekly for each Publix store location. They also prepare the information for quarterly retail bonuses to be paid to eligible store associates.

Corporate Travel makes all of the hotel, airline, and rental car reservations for associates who travel for business. Then they ensure Publix is billed correctly by processing the invoices relating to these accommodations.

Business Analysis & Reporting: Our Financial Analysts

Our associates make the difference between good business decisions and great business decisions. They provide the edge we need to analyze complex issues and help provide the systems, reporting, and consulting required by our growing company.

Associates in this department make the following contributions.

properly record and report financial statement results
develop, execute, and improve financial planning processes
provide business and financial support to retail operations and support areas
develop and implement decision support tools and business processes
develop cost/benefit analyses on major projects throughout the company
analyze the potential for new store sites, businesses, products, and equipment
properly cost manufactured products and account for manufacturing/distribution areas

Our mission is to provide exceptional business advisory and reporting services to all areas of Publix. To achieve this mission we will:

provide accurate, timely, and useful information in a cost-effective manner
establish and maintain positive relationships and trust with all levels of Publix associates
guide our business areas toward sound business decisions
serve as teachers of our methodology
continually strive to improve business processes, and
maintain an enriching, supportive work environment that encourages both personal and professional growth.

Payroll: Providing Associates Consistent and Accurate Paychecks

Publix associates appreciate getting paid on time and getting paid the right amount! The Payroll Department works to make this happen. Payroll associates perform a number of other functions as well, including:

providing answers to Publix associates who have questions regarding their pay, time worked, or absences
adjusting earnings for tax-reporting and determining appropriate year-to-date earnings and withholding tax deduction amounts
making out-of-sequence pay checks for various types of awards and holiday bonuses
identifying, tracking, and collecting money owed to Publix from active and inactive Publix associates and
maintaining all court order requests, including garnishment orders, to ensure that payments are deducted both timely and accurately.

Tax & Treasury: Our Investment Group

We work to ensure that Publix pays only its fair share of taxes, invests its money wisely, complies with money services reporting, and manages asset accounting. Responsibilities in this department include:

managing various taxes, including income, payroll, sales, use, and tangible
managing the daily cash position of Publix
making short-term and long-term investments
reporting and record-keeping for money service business
managing bank relationships to include in-store banks, and
performing asset accounting.

There are so many reasons I love working for Publix. One of the biggest was the opportunity to advance without a college degree. I started work at Publix 10 years ago as a part time cashier while still in high school. I hadn’t yet figured out what to do with my life, but did know that college wasn’t for me. I had some great managers who showed me that you can make a great career at Publix as long as you work hard and show dedication.

I was promoted to Assistant Customer Service Manager in 2005, a huge accomplishment for me. A few years later, I applied and was hired to work in Publix’s Accounting department. Three years later, I was promoted to my current position.

The benefits are great, and I am not just talking about health insurance. The discount program has saved us money on our cell phone plans and our hotel stays. Best of all is our Employee Stock Ownership Program: It’s wonderful when your company continually gives you stock. And getting a dividend check is wonderful.

But the benefits don’t stop there: I’ve met my very best friends through Publix. And I met my husband here too! Publix is truly a great place to work!
