Publix to Offer Flu Vaccination Program

LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 26, 2011 — Publix Pharmacies are offering flu immunizations — including traditional flu shots and a needle-free option — this flu season. Immunizations are given by trained Publix Pharmacists.

“Offering seasonal flu shots is an example of the premier service our customers expect from Publix,” said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. “Publix cares about its customers, and vaccinations also help lessen the spread of communicable diseases in our community.”

All Publix pharmacies offer the traditional flu shots for $30. Publix accepts cash, Medicare Part B and many other third-party insurances as payment for flu shots. Restrictions apply for minors and vary based on state laws. Talk with your Publix Pharmacist for more information.

Some pharmacies offer the Fluzone High Dose, recommended for persons aged 65 and older. Publix pharmacies will advertise it if they have a supply. For customers who meet the requirements for High Dose, wish to receive that vaccine and have Medicare coverage, it will be billed to Medicare. Those who do not have Medicare can receive the shot for $60.

In addition, some Publix pharmacies will offer new alternatives to the traditional flu shot for customers who want protection against the flu.

  • Publix will offer a needle-free flu vaccine in 52 pharmacies this year. This needle-free alternative uses air pressure to inject the vaccine into the muscle. This option costs the same price as the regular intramuscular flu shot.
  • Publix will offer a new intradermal flu vaccine in an additional 50 stores. The intradermal flu vaccine is injected into the skin instead of the muscle and uses a much smaller needle than the regular flu shot. This option will be available to customers 18 – 64 years of age. This option costs $35 — $5 more than the regular intramuscular vaccine.
