There are more than 39 million survivors of sexual abuse in America. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. 30% of sexual abuse is never reported. 95% of sexual abuse is preventable through education. These are staggering statistics that one South Florida woman knows all too well and is doing something about.
Lauren Book, founder of Lauren's Kids, was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education, Lauren sought to turn her experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and heal survivors.1
Lauren's organization educates adults and children about sexual abuse topics through an in school curriculum, a 24-hour Crisis Hotline and speaking engagements around the country. The organization also provides more than 4.5 million educational and awareness materials statewide through direct mail every year. The ultimate goal is to prevent sexual abuse through awareness and education, and to help survivors heal with guidance and support.2
Lauren is also a strong advocate in Tallahassee for victims of sexual abuse and has been successful in helping to pass key pieces of legislation. Most recently, Florida SB 1816 and HB 1355 named the “Protection of Vulnerable Persons” was passed into law strengthening child abuse reporting laws in Florida. The new law requires that all individuals report child sexual abuse, not just caregivers, making Florida the most well protected and only true full mandatory reporting law in the country.
Publix has partnered with Lauren’s Kids Walk in My Shoes event, a 1,500 mile journey across the state of Florida to raise awareness about sexual abuse.
Lauren’s memoir, “It’s OK to Tell,” is available for sale in select Publix Super Markets or on www.amazon.com.
