March of DimesPublix – “Not just a supermarket” We’re Making a Difference in the Communities We Serve March for Babies Since 1995, our associates and customers have raised more than $38 million to improve the health of babies. The mission of March of Dimes is to help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies. While research is an important part of its mission, the March of Dimes also funds public health education programs, such as World Prematurity Day, an awareness and education campaign, and local advocacy and community services programs to help women receive needed prenatal care and learn what they can do to have stronger, healthier babies. The money raised at Publix helps support these initiatives. Campaigns and Awareness Each April, associates across our five state operating area, and 1,050 locations, lace up their sneakers to walk for healthier babies in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies. Our associates connect to the vital work accomplished by the March of Dimes by visiting neonatal intensive care units and sharing their stories of how the March of Dimes has helped their families. These stories of hope and courage are shared through our employee publication, Publix News, and across our campaign materials, including our walk T-shirts where Publix March of Dimes babies are featured. Associates proudly wear their T-shirts on select dates leading up to the official walk date. Each year, thousands of associates show their support to their local communities and March of Dimes by walking for someone they love. About March of Dimes Heading into World War II, little was known about polio. The March of Dimes assisted in funding medical research that led to the Salk vaccine licensed for use on April 12, 1955. Other milestones include: July 22, 1958 – March of Dimes announced their new mission: birth defects prevention. 1970s – March of Dimes focus on prevention of birth defects and infant mortality began to encompass the problems of premature birth and low birthweight. The March of Dimes slogan, Be Good to Your Baby Before It Is Born, embodied a philosophy about proactive prenatal care. The promise of reinvention was evident no less in the fundraising arena as March of Dimes chapters began to hold local “walk-a-thons” as community fundraisers. Before long WalkAmerica (rebranded as March for Babies in 2008) became the premier walking event. 2003 – March of Dimes launched its Prematurity Campaign. 2005 – March of Dimes formally added prematurity to its mission statement and three years later extended the Prematurity Campaign to the year 2020 in an effort to apply additional scientific, clinical and public policy advances to solve this problem.
